Top tips for starting a career in care

There are many different jobs in the care industry, but how do you know what role is right for you – and what skills do you need to be successful?

Communication

Once you become a Care Assistant, you will really start to see how important your role is and how much the customer relies on you. You will need to be easy to communicate with and have a friendly, caring approach.

Independence

If you are new to care work, this will come with time, but if you have the ability to think ahead and use your initiative then this places you in good stead for a rewarding career in this sector.

Flexible

Alongside independence is your ability to be flexible. Tasks do not always go to plan so being flexible in your approach to dealing with situations will be hugely beneficial — not only to you but, vitally, to the customer.

Professionalism

Like with any job, it is up to you to take pride in your role and uphold your professional responsibilities.

Respect

One of the key qualities for any Care Assistant is being respectful to your customers at all times, remembering that you are in their home.

Compassion and Empathy

To be empathetic takes this further and means that not only do you understand a person’s feelings but also relate and put yourself in their shoes, thinking how you would want to be treated in the same situation.
