I never expected one job would become a career that's still inspiring me years later

Management & Leadership Roles

Amreet Dhillon, East of England

When I first joined Bluebird Care, I wasn't thinking about building a career.

I'd recently had my son and was looking for work that would fit around family life. Becoming a Care Assistant felt like the right step at the time, but I never imagined where that first role would eventually lead.

Looking back now, I can see how every opportunity built on the one before it.

I didn't have a long-term plan. I simply kept learning, taking on new challenges and discovering what I was capable of.

Before joining social care, I worked as a dental nurse. Although I'd always enjoyed helping people, I hadn't considered a future in care.

As I settled into my role, I began to realise there were opportunities to grow that I'd never expected.

Over the years, I progressed from Care Assistant to Supervisor, Lead Supervisor, Coordinator, Deputy Care Manager, Customer Care Manager and now Care Director.

Each role brought new experiences, new responsibilities and new opportunities to learn.

One of the biggest influences on my career has been the support of the people around me.

The training I completed through the Bluebird Care Academy, including my Level 3 qualification, gave me a strong foundation, but it was the encouragement of experienced managers and directors that helped me put that learning into practice.

Having people who believed in me, encouraged me and shared their experience gave me the confidence to keep moving forward.

Today, as Care Director, I work across customer care, team leadership, community partnerships and service development.

No two days are ever the same, and that's one of the things I enjoy most.

Whether I'm supporting colleagues, working with families or helping develop our services, every day brings a different opportunity to learn and make a positive contribution.

Some moments stay with you forever.

The conversations with families who tell us we've helped a loved one continue living well at home, or supported someone to spend their final days with dignity, are reminders of why this work matters.

Those are the moments that make every challenge worthwhile.

Looking back, I never expected my career to take me this far.

What began as a role that worked around family life became a profession that continues to challenge me, help me grow and give me opportunities I never imagined.

You don't need to have your whole career mapped out. Sometimes the first step is all it takes to discover where you're meant to be.
