In February 2015 I joined the team at Bluebird Care Solihull as a care assistant. I had lots of personal experience in care and this gave me the determination to begin a career in the care industry. The level and nature of care delivered at Bluebird Care Solihull is unique customer to customer. It may range from supporting a customer with conditions such as MS, dementia or Parkinson’s to supporting someone with learning or physical difficulties. To the more complex needs of giving palliative care to a customer in their own home. In so many ways I found this job highly rewarding. I enjoyed the relationship aspect of the job, building a relationship with the customer and learning how to care better, and be more attentive to a customer’s specific needs. I felt privileged to work for Bluebird Care Solihull and to be in a position to provide high quality care and support.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the role of a care assistant I decided to take a new career path within the office at Bluebird Care Solihull and I was promoted to care coordinator in November 2015. This was a totally new experience for me. I learned new skills which were paramount to me being a good coordinator, this included appropriately matching care assistants to customers and taking into account care assistant skills, experience and travel arrangements as well as the customer needs and preferences. I completed and distributed staff rosters on a weekly basis. I also formed good relationships with all staff members and customers and had experience with dealing with outside organisations such as district nurses, doctors, occupational therapists and organisations such as the Marie Curie and Age UK. It wasn’t just about filling the unfilled calls for me, it is the satisfaction of going home on a Friday evening knowing that all customers care calls are in place for the following week and knowing that all customers will receive the care and support they need to enable them to continue to live their life as independently as possible, in the comfort of their own homes.
In January 2017 an opportunity arose and I applied for the care manager position at Bluebird Care Solihull. I was then promoted to care manager. Although I have only been in my role a very short time I am thoroughly enjoying learning new skills and I am looking forward to my future in management at Bluebird Care Solihull.
If anyone was considering joining the care industry and becoming a care assistant I would heartily recommend it, my experience alone shows that there is always an opportunity to further your career in care.
