Meet Karin our Senior Home Care Assistant

Senior Home Care Assistant Karin from Redbridge

I have been working as a home care assistant for Bluebird Care Redbridge for nearly 9 years, I am now a Senior Carer. I started my career within the care industry as a Nurse back in my hometown (Johannesburg, South Africa) when I was 18. I loved that I was able to make a difference in people’s lives. I was working as a Nurse for 7 years until I got married and had my daughter. Once my daughter had grown up, we moved to England about 19 years ago, my husband is from Belgium he wanted to move back to Europe. I thought this would be a good time to look at getting back into the care sector. I got in contact with Bluebird Care as they were local to where I live. I saw they had good reviews and came highly recommended. They invited me in for an interview, and I got the position, I was so excited to get the chance to make a difference again.

I was working for Bluebird Care Redbridge for around 4 years before I got promoted to a Senior Carer. During this time, I have learnt a lot from being out in the field. I have also been given the opportunity to do my NVQ+ BTEC Level 2 & 3 and various other courses. Being promoted gave me more responsibilities, I do weekly spot checks on both our live in and domiciliary carer workers, I have trained new recruits and helped support them throughout their continued journey with Bluebird Care Redbridge.

The thing I like most about being a carer for Bluebird Care Redbridge is the encouragement and support I receive form the company 24/7. I also like that I can make a difference in the local community and for people living with in it, this is one of the reasons I chose to work at Bluebird Care Redbridge as they are very customer based.

One of my fondest memories is when I arrived one morning, he was sitting at the breakfast table busy reading his bible I enjoyed joining in the conversation, learning about his faith, we did this very often.

In my spare time I enjoy travelling, I often go back home to visit my daughter and my grandchildren, my grandson is turning 18 this year and my granddaughter is 9. My favourite place I have been was a cruise around Jamaica, it was beautiful. I also enjoy cooking and sewing, quite a few of my customers enjoy this as well, we often cook together, and on occasion I help my customers with their sewing.

Bluebird Care Redbridge delivers outstanding care, and I am proud the be able to work for a company who have high standards and stand up to their values and who look after their staff and customers
