Career progression:
Care Assistant – Lead Care Assistant – Assistant Supervisor – Supervisor

I left school in 2008 with dreams of always wanting to be a hairdresser and owning my own salon one day. After 2 years and a level 2 qualification behind me, I was unemployed and unable to carry on my hairdressing career as many hairdressers’ were either full or wanting staff with experience. I was unemployed for about 3 months. I looked at care jobs but it never really stood out as much of a career for me, but decided I will give it a go as I needed the money desperately.

I started in 2011 and was petrified, on my first day I was so worried about the smell of someone else’s poo I put vapo rub under my nose to block out the smell. But it wasn’t bad at all, in fact I loved every minute of my first shift and couldn’t wait to get back out and do another day’s work. I used to work mainly double ups and worked very closely with dementia and end of life. This is what I became most passionate about.

In 2014 I came to Bluebird for a job as a care worker, working mostly in Wivenhoe as I live there but would help out with any shifts that needed covering. I then was given the opportunity to be put through my NVQ level 3 in Health and Social Care, which I successfully completed in January 2016.

Whilst doing my NVQ I was offered a senior role within Bluebird, helping out with reviews, skills checks and I used to help with coordinating and the on call in the week and weekends. When I finished my NVQ in January I was very fortunate that a supervisor role had come available a few weeks later, so I applied and was given the opportunity I had always wanted. Now doing the job for just over 4 months I am learning every day, I get to see and be a part of all the behind the scenes work that goes into making Bluebird by far the best company I have worked for.
Now I am currently doing my level 5 Diploma in Leadership for Health and Social Care and will hopefully be a care manager myself. Its honestly the best decision I have made choosing Care as my career and I look forward to what the future prospects are.
