At Bluebird Care (Bedford) we are committed to providing our customers with the very best care and support services within our customer’s homes. To do this, we believe that our care assistants have to be trained to the highest level. In addition to their mandatory training we provide continual professional development courses including Pressure Care Awareness, Diabetes, Virtual Dementia Tour and Communication Skills.
Our Induction programme is completed by all new members of staff regardless of their experience.
Our induction programme lasts 5 -7 days depending upon our trainees. We are very responsive to our new members of staff and we cover the subjects at a pace and style that suits them. We have a blended approach to learning. This means that our training includes practical sessions, knowledge sessions, videos and a state of the art e-learning platform.
Subjects covered in our induction programme include; The Care Certificate - we use the 15 standards of The Care Certificate as a basis for our training programme, Moving & Handling People, Medication Administration, Pressure Awareness, Safeguarding Adults & Children, MCA, Communication and Dementia.
Mandtory training subjects include; Medication Administration, Moving & Handling People, Safeguarding, Health & Safety and Infection Control, they are required to be completed every year. This ensures our staff are kept up to date with latest policies, procedures and legislation. It also give our management team a chance to check that our staff are working in a safe and appropriate manner and for our staff to provide feedback and ask any questions they may have around the individual subjects.
We also offer one off training sessions such as the Virtual Dementia Tour, which is an immersive experience and gives the trainees and an idea of what it is like to have mid-stage Dementia.
In addition to the training we provide our staff we also offer them the opportunity to earn a professional qualification in Health & Social Care as part of our partnership with Bedford College.
All of our management team receive training in Safeguarding, MCA, Health & Safety and GDPR. Other training our management team receive is often role specific, eg. Lyn-Marie & Vanessa have completed Train the Trainer courses so they are qualified to deliver our training sessions. Rosie has received Roster training from our Franchise Support Centre so she is trained on our systems. to complete our customers and staff''s weekly rotas.
Our supervisors and operational team also complete the same training programme as our Care Assistants so they are up to date with relevant skills in order to ensure our customers are provided with the very best care and support.
We source our training from a number of sources. This includes the local NHS teams who and deliver sessions on Parkinson’s, Swallowing Problems and alternative feeding methods., amoung others
Our staff have also visited the MS Therapy Centre in Bedford to find out more about MS and to tour their facilities.
TJ Training come along to our office every 6 months to provide our staff with Basic Life Support training and refreshers. Our team love this session with Tony who makes the subject very interesting and entertain our staff at the same time.
We also have had sessions from The Mobility Physio on falls prevention and we even had a local mechanic come in and offer advice to our care assistants on maintaining their cars!
